It is with great joy that I welcome you to St. Francis of Assisi University Parish, established to serve the University of Alabama students, faculty and staff. In particular, we are proud to invite you to be a part of “Bama Catholic,” the campus ministry component of our parish. It is a great time to be Catholic at the University of Alabama! With increasing enrollment from out of state, more than 1700 incoming freshmen have identified themselves as Catholic and over 6,000 students from the entire student body.
Our goal is “Finding, forming, and launching students into lifelong Catholic discipleship and mission.” We want St. Francis of Assisi University Parish to be a home away from home, but also a place that facilitates a true encounter with Christ. College is a period of profound growth in your relationship with God, but it is also riddled with many pitfalls and dangers to your faith. The search for happiness can lead to some very dark places. Jesus, the light of the world, came to set us free and give us true life.
“Bama Catholic” offers students many opportunities to spend time with the Lord in prayer and the sacraments, to get connected with others, grow in the knowledge of the Faith and to put one’s faith in action through service and evangelization. The newly opened Saban Catholic Student Center is another sign of the growing Catholic presence on campus. Having St. Francis of Assisi as our patron saint, we are constantly reminded of what God can do with one person who is completely in love with Jesus! We entrust this ministry to our Blessed Mother, who through her prayers and perfect example of discipleship is always reminding us to “do whatever my Son tells you” (John 2:5).
We look forward to meeting you and are happy to say, “Welcome Home.” Make a decision now to put God first during your college years and you will see the power of grace in your life! Commit from the very first weekend to go to mass weekly and stay close to the sacraments. Include your Bible, Catechism, and Rosary on your items to bring list and get ready for a great adventure!
May God Bless You!
